A safe and trusted option when you’re farther along

When you’re in your second trimester and considering abortion care, the stakes can feel higher, the options fewer, and the stress more intense, especially if you’re coming from a state where abortion access is restricted or unavailable. CARE Clinic Colorado, located in Pueblo, CO, is here to help. We regularly care for patients traveling from Alamosa, CO and beyond, offering both vacuum aspiration up to 18.6 weeks and surgical abortion care after 20.6 weeks of pregnancy.

Let’s be real: navigating travel, timing, and medical care all at once is a lot. But the good news? Colorado is close. If you’re within driving distance, or even if it’s a short flight away, our Pueblo clinic is easy to reach, and our team is experienced in helping out-of-state patients manage the details.

What to expect from second trimester abortion care

If you’re more than 18.6 weeks pregnant, your procedure will typically be done using dilation and evacuation (D&E), often in combination with vacuum aspiration. Most patients complete the process over one to two consecutive clinic visits. We’ll walk you through everything step-by-step, no surprises, no cold clinical jargon.

You won’t be alone during any part of this process.

Here’s how it usually goes:

  • Day 1: You’ll meet with our medical team, have an ultrasound to confirm gestational age, and begin cervical preparation (this may include medication or the use of laminaria).
  • Day 2 (if needed): The procedure itself is performed safely in our clinic using a gentle combination of techniques under sedation or anesthesia. Recovery takes place onsite with our nurses by your side.

You won’t be alone during any part of this process.

Helping you get here, stay here, and feel supported

If you’re coming from Alamosa, CO, you probably have questions about the logistics. We get it, and we’ve helped hundreds of people just like you. Whether it’s coordinating appointment timing, helping find affordable lodging, or making sure you know where to stop for a good bite to eat on the way in, we’re here for the whole journey.

Want to bring a support person? Great. Want to come solo? That’s okay, too. Just know, from the moment you step through our doors in Pueblo, we’ll do our best to make you feel seen, respected, and taken care of.

Why second trimester abortions might be necessary

You might be thinking, “Why would someone wait this long?” Well, most people don’t plan to have a second trimester abortion, but life doesn’t always line up with timelines. Maybe it took a while to confirm the pregnancy. Maybe a medical complication came up. Maybe you had to save up money or make childcare arrangements. Or maybe, you simply didn’t have access to care earlier.

Whatever the reason, it’s valid. And you deserve care that doesn’t judge you for when or why, it simply focuses on providing excellent, evidence-based medical support when you need it most.

When is vacuum aspiration appropriate?

If you’re still in the earlier part of the second trimester, anywhere up to 18.6 weeks, you may be eligible for a vacuum aspiration, which is a shorter, in-clinic procedure that typically only requires one visit. It’s performed by experienced providers using gentle suction, and it’s one of the most common and safest methods used worldwide.

We’ll help determine the best option based on your gestational age, overall health, and preferences.

Abortion Pill FAQ

Offered up to 11.6 weeks

When taken in the first trimester, the abortion pill is 94-98% effective.

If you are taking the abortion pill, some minor side effects may set in after taking the second pill. These side effects may include bleeding, cramping, and nausea.

The cramping happens because the second pill causes your uterus to contract, which is the source of these cramping pains. You can treat these cramping pains in the same way you would with your usual menstrual cramps. For bleeding, it can vary from patient to patient. You may also pass clots with the bleeding. This bleeding is normal as long as you don’t use more than two menstrual pads.

Your symptoms should start to subside 24 hours after taking the second pill.

The abortion pill is very safe, with less than 1% of patients having serious complications.

One reason that patients choose the abortion pill is because it is not invasive. In 98% of patients, there is no surgical procedures necessary. We look to avoid surgical procedures by using the abortion pill, as less surgery means less risk.

The abortion pill does come with cramping and bleeding. The bleeding is usually heavier than a regular period, and the cramping can be moderate to heavy. Most patients find this to be tolerable, but if you do not we will be here to help.

Like any medical procedure, there are some risks. However, complications are very rare. These risks include infection, blood loss, and incomplete pregnancy termination. We will monitor you to ensure that you are safe, and in our follow up appointment we’ll check again.

There is no scientific evidence that the abortion pill can be reversed, so you should be 100% sure you want to go through with it before you take the first pill. We will never pressure you into a choice you don’t want to make, we are here to support you and make sure you have all the information you need for an informed choice.

There is a very low chance of this happening, but if it does, we’ll follow up with a surgical abortion to complete the termination of the pregnancy.
