Surgical Abortion Options

Vacuum Aspiration
Up to 16.6 weeks

In-clinic abortion (also known as a surgical abortion) is another safe and effective method of ending early pregnancies, that involves a pelvic exam, dilation of the cervix, and removal of pregnancy tissue through vacuum aspiration. It has a 99% chance of successfully ending the pregnancy with minimal disruption to patients’ lives.

Procedures done after 16.6 weeks can be done over a course of 1-2 consecutive clinic visits. This procedure consists of dilation of the cervix followed by the removal of pregnancy with a combination of using instruments (dilation and evacuation—D&E) and vacuum aspiration. It has a 99% chance of successfully ending the pregnancy with minimal disruption to patients’ lives.

The CARE Colorado Difference

Vacuum Aspiration Information

Offered up to 16.6 weeks

During a vacuum aspiration, your doctor inserts a speculum into the vaginal opening, like what is used during a pap-smear. Through that speculum, a small sterile tube is inserted. This tube is connected to a manual vacuum which provides gentle suction to remove pregnancy tissue. Once the procedure is complete, we use an ultrasound to ensure that the tissue has been fully removed.

Vacuum aspiration has a success rate of 99-100%

Vacuum aspiration is very safe, with a complication rate of less than 1%.

Vacuum aspirations are performed up to 16.6 weeks after your last regular period. This is when they are safest and most effective.

You will likely experience cramping during the procedure, which is a short procedure. Once it’s over, your cramping will likely subside. Some patients report off and on cramping in the next few days, but most do not.

The procedure itself is quick, lasting only up to 5 minutes. Afterward, we’ll need you to spend about 30 minutes in the recovery room to monitor you before you’re welcome to leave.

It has a 99% chance of successfully ending the pregnancy with minimal disruption to patients’ lives. After an ultrasound confirms your length of pregnancy, you will be given Misoprostol before the procedure begins. This medication dilates the vagina to make the procedure easier and minimize discomfort. A couple of hours after you’ve taken the Misoprostol, you’ll be put under anesthesia and your trained, experienced doctor will use medical equipment to safely evacuate the uterus.

Surgical abortions have a very low rate of complications. However, they are a surgery and use anesthesia. As with any surgery or procedure that uses anesthesia, there is always a risk of complications like bleeding or infection. These risks are why we perform blood work and have you visit beforehand so that we catch anything that might increase the chance of complications.

This depends on your individual health. For some higher risk patients, you will receive general anesthesia. For lower risk patients, you will receive local anesthesia, sometimes combined with a mild sedative.

There is no scientific evidence that states having a surgical abortion will affect your ability to get pregnant in the future.

We highly recommend having a follow up appointment a few weeks later, which your doctor will schedule with you. This appointment serves as a check-in. We will make sure that you are healthy and without complications, as well as ensure that the pregnancy has been terminated.
