Woman Taking The Abortion Pill

A South Carolina Patient’s Guide to the Abortion Pill at CARE Clinic Colorado

Facing an unwanted pregnancy in South Carolina can feel like you’re carrying a secret with nowhere safe to talk about it. Laws, politics, and uncertainty all blend together, making a decision that’s already hard feel even more complicated.

At CARE Clinic Colorado, located in Pueblo, CO, we believe every person deserves safe, legal, and compassionate medical care, no matter what zip code they call home. If you’re in South Carolina and looking into the abortion pill, this guide is for you.

The Basics: What Is the Abortion Pill?

The phrase “abortion pill” refers to a medical process using two medications:

  • Mifepristone stops the pregnancy from progressing.
  • Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and expel its contents.

This process is medically approved and used safely worldwide. It’s effective more than 95% of the time when taken correctly. Physically, many people describe it as similar to a heavy period, though symptoms vary from person to person.

At CARE Clinic Colorado, our job is to ensure you know exactly what to expect, from how to take the medications to how to recognize any warning signs. We believe informed patients feel more secure and less alone.

Why South Carolina Residents Travel to Colorado

Many people in South Carolina explore out-of-state care because of local laws or fear of privacy breaches. Here’s why Colorado, and specifically CARE Clinic Colorado, can be a good option:

  • Legal Protection: Colorado laws protect abortion access.
  • Discreet, Compassionate Care: Patients receive medical care without political or moral judgment.
  • Options for Care: We offer the abortion pill in-clinic and, when legally permitted, through mail delivery after medical screening.
  • Privacy First: We treat patient confidentiality as essential, not optional.

For South Carolina patients, knowing there’s a place where the decision is entirely yours can provide relief and peace of mind.

How Far Is Colorado from South Carolina?

Colorado might look far away on a map, but for many patients, the journey is manageable. Here’s what it typically involves:

  • Flights: Airports in Columbia, Charleston, and Greenville offer routes into Denver International Airport. From Denver, Pueblo is roughly a two-hour drive south.
  • Driving: Some patients prefer a road trip for privacy or personal comfort. Highways like I-20 and I-70 connect South Carolina westward toward Colorado. It’s a significant drive, but for some, it feels more secure than flying.

CARE Clinic Colorado helps many patients coordinate travel plans so you’re not navigating logistics alone.

Abortion Pill FAQ

Offered up to 11 weeks

When taken in the first trimester, the abortion pill is 94-98% effective.

If you are taking the abortion pill, some minor side effects may set in after taking the second pill. These side effects may include bleeding, cramping, and nausea.

The cramping happens because the second pill causes your uterus to contract, which is the source of these cramping pains. You can treat these cramping pains in the same way you would with your usual menstrual cramps. For bleeding, it can vary from patient to patient. You may also pass clots with the bleeding. This bleeding is normal as long as you don’t use more than two menstrual pads.

Your symptoms should start to subside 24 hours after taking the second pill.

The abortion pill is very safe, with less than 1% of patients having serious complications.

One reason that patients choose the abortion pill is because it is not invasive. In 98% of patients, there is no surgical procedures necessary. We look to avoid surgical procedures by using the abortion pill, as less surgery means less risk.

The abortion pill does come with cramping and bleeding. The bleeding is usually heavier than a regular period, and the cramping can be moderate to heavy. Most patients find this to be tolerable, but if you do not we will be here to help.

Like any medical procedure, there are some risks. However, complications are very rare. These risks include infection, blood loss, and incomplete pregnancy termination. We will monitor you to ensure that you are safe, and in our follow up appointment we’ll check again.

There is no scientific evidence that the abortion pill can be reversed, so you should be 100% sure you want to go through with it before you take the first pill. We will never pressure you into a choice you don’t want to make, we are here to support you and make sure you have all the information you need for an informed choice.

There is a very low chance of this happening, but if it does, we’ll follow up with a surgical abortion to complete the termination of the pregnancy.
