Woman Talking to Doctor About Abortion Options

Abortion Care Beyond State Lines: The Truth for North Carolina Patients | CARE Clinic Colorado

Abortion access has become a maze in North Carolina. Between new laws, shifting political debates, and long waiting periods, many patients feel unsure where to turn.

If you’re considering your options, one truth remains: safe, respectful care still exists, even if it’s beyond your state borders. Here’s what patients in North Carolina need to know about traveling for abortion services and how CARE Clinic Colorado can help.

Busting Myths for North Carolina Patients

Let’s clear up some of the confusion.

Myth #1: Traveling Out of State is Illegal

Fact: It’s absolutely legal for North Carolina residents to travel to Colorado for abortion care. There’s no law stopping you from crossing state lines for medical services.

Myth #2: It’s Impossible to Get Help Far From Home

Fact: It might feel daunting, but many clinics, including CARE Clinic Colorado, regularly assist out-of-state patients with travel planning, appointment timing, and aftercare. You’re not left on your own.

Myth #3: All Abortions Must Be Surgical

Fact: Early pregnancies can often be ended safely with medication. CARE Clinic Colorado offers medication abortion (the abortion pill) up to 11 weeks. Many patients choose this option because it’s less invasive and sometimes available as a mail-order option (once you’re physically in Colorado).

Why Leave North Carolina for Colorado?

North Carolina currently imposes:

  • Mandatory waiting periods
  • Gestational age limits
  • Legal uncertainties that shift with new legislation

While some patients can navigate those hurdles, others simply can’t afford to wait. Colorado’s laws offer stable, broad protections for abortion care, meaning patients from North Carolina can receive services without the same restrictions.

But Isn’t Colorado Far?

Let’s talk logistics.

  • Flights: From Charlotte, Raleigh, or Greensboro, nonstop flights to Denver International Airport (DEN) run daily. From Denver, Pueblo is about a 2-hour drive.
  • Driving: Road trippers from Charlotte face roughly 22-24 hours behind the wheel. It’s a long haul but possible for those preferring privacy.

No matter your choice, our staff can help coordinate the puzzle pieces. Flights, hotels, clinic timing, we’ve helped many North Carolina patients navigate it smoothly.

Common Questions from North Carolina Patients

Can I stay anonymous?
Yes. Colorado protects patient privacy strongly. We don’t share your information without consent.

Do I have to stay overnight?
For the abortion pill, most patients return home the same day. Surgical abortions may require longer stays, depending on individual care needs.

Will I be breaking North Carolina laws?
No. It’s legal to travel for abortion care. Your personal medical decisions remain private.

Abortion Pill FAQ

Offered up to 11 weeks

When taken in the first trimester, the abortion pill is 94-98% effective.

If you are taking the abortion pill, some minor side effects may set in after taking the second pill. These side effects may include bleeding, cramping, and nausea.

The cramping happens because the second pill causes your uterus to contract, which is the source of these cramping pains. You can treat these cramping pains in the same way you would with your usual menstrual cramps. For bleeding, it can vary from patient to patient. You may also pass clots with the bleeding. This bleeding is normal as long as you don’t use more than two menstrual pads.

Your symptoms should start to subside 24 hours after taking the second pill.

The abortion pill is very safe, with less than 1% of patients having serious complications.

One reason that patients choose the abortion pill is because it is not invasive. In 98% of patients, there is no surgical procedures necessary. We look to avoid surgical procedures by using the abortion pill, as less surgery means less risk.

The abortion pill does come with cramping and bleeding. The bleeding is usually heavier than a regular period, and the cramping can be moderate to heavy. Most patients find this to be tolerable, but if you do not we will be here to help.

Like any medical procedure, there are some risks. However, complications are very rare. These risks include infection, blood loss, and incomplete pregnancy termination. We will monitor you to ensure that you are safe, and in our follow up appointment we’ll check again.

There is no scientific evidence that the abortion pill can be reversed, so you should be 100% sure you want to go through with it before you take the first pill. We will never pressure you into a choice you don’t want to make, we are here to support you and make sure you have all the information you need for an informed choice.

There is a very low chance of this happening, but if it does, we’ll follow up with a surgical abortion to complete the termination of the pregnancy.

Surgical Abortions Information

Offered after 18.6 weeks

Surgical abortions have a very low rate of complications. However, they are a surgery and use anesthesia. As with any surgery or procedure that uses anesthesia, there is always a risk of complications like bleeding or infection. These risks are why we perform blood work and have you visit beforehand so that we catch anything that might increase the chance of complications.

This depends on your individual health. For some higher risk patients, you will receive IV sedation (Twilight Sedation). For lower risk patients, you will receive local anesthesia, sometimes combined with a mild sedative.

There is no scientific evidence that states having a surgical abortion will affect your ability to get pregnant in the future.

We highly recommend having a follow up appointment a few weeks later, which your doctor will schedule with you. This appointment serves as a check-in. We will make sure that you are healthy and without complications, as well as ensure that the pregnancy has been terminated.

Vacuum Aspiration Information

Offered up to 18.6 weeks

Vacuum aspiration has a success rate of 99-100%

Vacuum aspiration is very safe, with a complication rate of less than 1%.

Vacuum aspirations are performed up to 18.6 weeks after your last regular period in CO. This is when they are safest and most effective.

You will likely experience cramping during the procedure, which is a short procedure. Once it’s over, your cramping will likely subside. Some patients report off and on cramping in the next few days, but most do not.

The procedure itself is quick, lasting only up to 5 minutes. Afterward, we’ll need you to spend about 30 minutes in the recovery room to monitor you before you’re welcome to leave.
