Woman Taking The Abortion Pill

Heard You Can’t Leave Indiana for an Abortion? Let’s Bust That Myth

Let’s tackle the elephant in the room.

A lot of people in Indiana believe there’s no way out if they need an abortion. They’ve heard whispers that it’s illegal to leave the state or that clinics in other states will slam the door in their faces.

Here’s the reality: It’s legal for you to travel from Indiana to Colorado for abortion care. And yes, you can get the abortion pill here safely and privately, either in a clinic or by mail once you’re in-state.

At CARE Clinic Colorado in Pueblo, we welcome people from all over the country, including Indiana. And we know how to help make this journey as smooth as possible.

So How Far Is Colorado From Indiana, Really?

People hear “Colorado” and picture a cross-country trek. But from Indiana, it’s not as distant as it seems.

  • Flying: Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and even Evansville have regular flights into Denver. From there, Pueblo is a few hours south.
  • Driving: Prefer the road? Highways connect Indiana directly westward. Many of our patients make it in under a day’s drive.

We’ve watched folks arrive stressed and frazzled, only to discover the trip was far less complicated than they feared.

What Exactly Is The Abortion Pill?

Let’s break this down without medical jargon.

The abortion pill is actually a two-part medication process that safely ends a pregnancy up to 11 weeks:

  • Mifepristone stops the pregnancy from progressing.
  • Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and empty itself, much like a heavy period.

It’s not pain-free, but it’s over 95% effective and doesn’t involve surgery or anesthesia. Some people want a clinic’s guidance; others prefer privacy. Both paths are real, safe, and legal in Colorado.

Two Ways to Get the Abortion Pill at CARE Clinic Colorado

Instead of lists, let’s clarify how this works through headings you can skim:

  1. In-Clinic Visit

Some folks prefer a hands-on, medical environment. In Pueblo, we’ll confirm your pregnancy details, discuss your medical history, and give you the medications onsite. You’ll leave knowing exactly what to expect, and you’ll have real people in your corner if you have questions or concerns.

  2. Abortion Pill by Mail

Others value privacy above all. If you’d rather not come into a clinic, you can have a telehealth appointment after you arrive in Colorado. From there, we can send the abortion pill discreetly to a Colorado address, a hotel, an Airbnb, a friend’s house, wherever you feel safest.

Both options are legal for travelers from Indiana. Neither path is “better.” The right choice is simply the one that feels right to you.

Colorado: A Different Legal Landscape

Indiana’s laws leave people feeling trapped. But here’s the crucial difference:

Abortion is legal in Colorado.

Traveling here from Indiana is allowed, and you can safely receive abortion care, including the abortion pill.

We’re not legal professionals, and we always suggest speaking with an attorney if you have worries. But you’d be surprised how many Indiana patients have already made this journey and found relief on the other side.

Why CARE Clinic Colorado?

Here’s the thing: there’s no shortage of clinics out there. But CARE Clinic Colorado is more than a place to pick up medication.

Instead of bullet points, let’s paint a picture:

Imagine stepping into a space where no one raises an eyebrow at your decision. Where costs are explained upfront so you’re not blindsided. Where medical standards are rooted in science and compassion, not politics. And where staff understand that traveling from Indiana isn’t just a physical journey, but an emotional one, too.

Abortion Pill FAQ

Offered up to 11 weeks

When taken in the first trimester, the abortion pill is 94-98% effective.

If you are taking the abortion pill, some minor side effects may set in after taking the second pill. These side effects may include bleeding, cramping, and nausea.

The cramping happens because the second pill causes your uterus to contract, which is the source of these cramping pains. You can treat these cramping pains in the same way you would with your usual menstrual cramps. For bleeding, it can vary from patient to patient. You may also pass clots with the bleeding. This bleeding is normal as long as you don’t use more than two menstrual pads.

Your symptoms should start to subside 24 hours after taking the second pill.

The abortion pill is very safe, with less than 1% of patients having serious complications.

One reason that patients choose the abortion pill is because it is not invasive. In 98% of patients, there is no surgical procedures necessary. We look to avoid surgical procedures by using the abortion pill, as less surgery means less risk.

The abortion pill does come with cramping and bleeding. The bleeding is usually heavier than a regular period, and the cramping can be moderate to heavy. Most patients find this to be tolerable, but if you do not we will be here to help.

Like any medical procedure, there are some risks. However, complications are very rare. These risks include infection, blood loss, and incomplete pregnancy termination. We will monitor you to ensure that you are safe, and in our follow up appointment we’ll check again.

There is no scientific evidence that the abortion pill can be reversed, so you should be 100% sure you want to go through with it before you take the first pill. We will never pressure you into a choice you don’t want to make, we are here to support you and make sure you have all the information you need for an informed choice.

There is a very low chance of this happening, but if it does, we’ll follow up with a surgical abortion to complete the termination of the pregnancy.
